| A video co-produced by the Michigan
Forest Resource Alliance and Michigan
United Conservation clubs has won one of the most prestigious honors awarded
for outdoor programming in the World. The video, entitled Michigan Forest
Forever, was chosen from five nominees for a Teddy Award for Best
Conservation Program for 1998-1999 by the Michigan Outdoor Writers Association. (MOWA).
Other nominees for this category included the Natural Resource Conservation Service and
the National Association of Conservation Districts for their video: The Good Earth,
Bass Proshops production: Deer Management, and Babe Winklemans video
entry: The Sea-going Striper. Now in its 35th year, the Teddy Awards were founded by noted outdoorsmen and MOWA co-founders Mort Neff and George Pierrot, and named in honor of conservationist, President Theodore Rosevelt. Judged on creativity, content and technical excellence, the Teddy Awards are open to producers from all over the World, and are recognized as one of the most important and sought after journalistic awards for visual and electronic representation of conservation and the out-of-doors. Michigan Forest Forever joins past winners of the Best Conservation Program category, which include the nationally recognized television programs Frontline and 20/20. Written by Tom Huggler and produced by James Ford, Michigan Forest Forever aired first on the television program Michigan Out-of-Doors, primarily on Michigan PBS stations last fall. This video examines the past, present and future of Michigans forest industry as it relates to both the States economy and its culture. Segment one revisits the history of logging and forestry in Michigan; segment two concentrates on connecting people to the forest by demonstrating the products that come from it, and the recreational activities enjoyed there. Segment three concludes the series with an overview of current management practices, highlighting the industrys commitment to the Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI)SM. program. Plans are underway to produce a second video, specifically targeting private landowners and wildlife management. MFRA will keep you informed as this project develops.
